Adult sailing-for-beginners: the latest trend

An engaging winter for Puerto Calero sailing schools

MBA regatta organised by Endeavour Sailing with Puerto Calero Sailing Centre

Local Puerto Calero Sailing Centre is finding their J80 school is increasingly popular with adults who are delighted to be learning sailing. “It’s an accessible sport with reasonable prices that gets you out, having fun with others on the water in the sunshine! What’s not to like!” laughs Andrés Ramirez, director of the school. “We have a good age-range, everyone gets on well and they are all making great progress”.

“The surprising development for us is that 80% of our students are women; naturally we hoped that this was due to our charm and good looks but we also have to allow for the fact that as children, sailing was not as much part of female culture for our generations – so they are now making up for lost time.”

With access to a big fleet of J80s the school has had a busy winter with visiting groups coming out to Lanzarote to enjoy three-day team-building regattas. “People seem to be really happy here. After racing they can peel off the outer layers and relax in the sun in the marina. It’s rewarding to see many coming back.”

RYA Training School, Endeavour Sailing is another popular mainstay of the marina and after 6 years in Lanzarote, the centre is now able to offer the cruising sailor all the Royal Yachting Association courses from Start Yachting to Yachtmaster Ocean (except Radar).  Winter is busiest with loyal customers welcoming the attraction of year-round sunshine and Endeavour’s professional and friendly atmosphere.

The latest RYA to become available is the Basic Sea Survival Course, already a great success with the next one scheduled for the 31st October.  They have a full programme of one day courses running throughout the year and offer a 10% discount to Calero Marinas customers.
