THE BLUE FLAG IN PUERTO CALERO: A COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT

  • Blue Flag,News,News Puerto Calero,Puerto Calero
  • Puerto Calero thanks berth-holders, visitors, and local companies for their assistance in renewing the Blue Flag.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasised the need to protect our natural surroundings

Being able to fly the Blue Flag in Puerto Calero reflects the collective efforts of our marvellous visitors and residents and the local businesses that operate here. Whilst the marina offers a full range of recycling facilities, for example, it is up to the public and local businesses to ensure that these are used correctly to prevent polluting local waters. Similarly, it is due to the generous assistance from watersports schools such as Código Cero, that we could offer environmental activities to inform children and visitors about local marine fauna and the importance of conservation.

Threats to global biodiversity have become front-page news during the COVID-19 pandemic and so over the next year, we will be renewing our efforts to promote good practice, including how to reduce consumption of water and electricity and the generation of waste, the fragility of local marina ecosystems and the nature and characteristics of local protected areas.

In needing to take precautionary measures in order to protect others, the COVID-19 pandemic has also reminded us how interdependent we are on each other, and how our behaviour can directly impact living beings around us. We are very fortunate that the sailing boats that visit Lanzarote from all over the world, are some of the only visitors that arrive on the island via sustainable means, and as such inspire us to continue working towards adopting and encouraging processes that support the circular economy.

Following safe and responsible tourism practices are essential, especially for coastal facilities which can also have an impact on local marine biodiversity. We congratulate other Blue Flag recipients around Lanzarote and the Canary Islands for their deserved recognition
