The Sorcery (RCNA), skippered by Antonio Hernández, was declared the winner of the 2nd
Gran Canaria – Fuerteventura Regatta, a cruising race organised by the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, which set sail last Friday, 1 May, from the bay of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, bound for Marina Jandía in Fuerteventura.
This second edition consolidates an event that has been extremely well received since its inception, bringing together a notable fleet of cruising class yachts. The regatta was contested over a course of 63 nautical miles, with boats competing in the ORC 0 to ORC 5 categories, as well as featuring the added attraction of the Corinthian Trophy.
Weather conditions shaped the course of the race. The lack of wind throughout the course made sailing difficult, resulting in only two boats managing to complete the regatta within the time limit set for qualification, which was scheduled for 8.00 pm on the same Friday.
Antonio Hernández’s Sorcery claimed victory. In second place was the Felipeva VI, skippered by Felipe del Rosario of the RCNGC. The event was held in collaboration with the Club Náutico Península de Jandía and Calero Marinas, and was also supported by the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation.
The regatta has also received institutional support from the Government of the Canary Islands, the Island Council of Gran Canaria, the Island Council of Fuerteventura, Pájara Town Council and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Town Council. In addition, there is collaboration from Naviera Armas
Trasmediterránea, the Spanish Association of Yacht Clubs and the Canarian Association of
Yacht Clubs.
Now firmly established as a flagship event on the Canary Islands’ sailing calendar, the Gran Canaria – Fuerteventura Regatta continues to grow and strengthen its position as an ocean crossing of great sporting appeal.
The awards ceremony, held at the Morro Jable Fishermen’s Guild, was attended by
various officials from the islands, including Alejandro Jorge Moreno, Mayor of Pájara, Luis
González Cabrera, Minister for Sport of the Fuerteventura Island Council, Carmen Alonso,
Minister for New Technologies, Eva Sánchez, Councillor for Accessibility and Housing at
Pájara Town Council, Fernando Marrero Flores, Vice-Commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of
Gran Canaria, Pilar Hernández, Marketing Manager at Calero Marinas, and Fernando Méndez,
Manager of Marina Jandía.
