  • News

Rafael García’s boat qualifies for the world championship in Costa Rica.

The second day of the Puerto Calero Marlin Cup continued to offer plenty of excitement. with several reports of catches that resulted in a white for the boat Jonil from neighbouring Fuerteventura and two blues for Cow Boy and Mota. Finally, after having released a blue on the first day, Rafael García’s Monty won the prize for the highest score and went on to qualify for the World Championship in Costa Rica 2024.

Once the jury had deliberated, and in accordance with the IGFA regulations that govern these tournaments, classification was declared closed and the second prize for the highest score went to the boat Maynieves, owned by Alfonso Valls and third prize to the boat Sauvage, owned by Wanad Janina.

The Puerto Calero Marlin Cup collaborates with RedPromar and the OBAM (the Marine Litter Observatory), who commended Marlin and Rapanui during the prize-giving ceremony for the collecting marine debris during the competition – which might pose a risk to mariners, and for reporting of sightings of groups of Risso’s dolphins and killer whales.

Lastly, the prize for the best photograph offered by Canarias Lures went to Mota Uno, owned by Antonio Rodríguez.

Oswaldo Betancort, the president of the Lanzarote Island Council, declared that the local authorities should support such initiatives as these, that add value to the destination and enhance the quality of the tourism. He also congratulated the Calero family for their commitment and work as they mark the company’s 40th anniversary.

After the dinner and awards ceremony at the Amura restaurant in Puerto Calero, the participants enjoyed the Motown Party with performances by the Motown Ensemble, Martina Skat, Mr. Paradise and Emma Play, putting the finishing touch to the celebration of the 30th anniversary of this tournament, which enjoys such loyal support from the regional fleet.

The Puerto Calero Marlin Cup counts on sponsorship from the Lanzarote Island Council, Tourismo Lanzarote, the Yaiza Town Hall and Sports Department, Cicar and Aon.
