Departing from <strong><a title=\"Marina Lanzarote\" href=\"http:\/\/www.caleromarinas.com\/marinas\/lanzarote\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marina Lanzarote<\/a><\/strong> in the Canary Islands, this inaugural race will leave for Newport, Rhode Island at noon on the 9<sup>th<\/sup> April, 2016.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5314\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caleromarinas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Puma-Racing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5314\" class=\" wp-image-5314 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.caleromarinas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Puma-Racing.jpg\" alt=\"Calero Marinas Solo Transat\" width=\"368\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VO70 Puma Racing training out of Puerto Calero<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The solo challenge is open to all IMOCA 60 monohulls and teams can download the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caleromarinas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/CALERO-MARINAS-SOLO-TRANSAT-NOTICE-OF-RACE1.pdf\">CALERO MARINAS SOLO TRANSAT (NOTICE OF RACE)<\/a>\u00a0or contact the <strong><a title=\"solotransat@caleromarinas.com\" href=\"mailto:solotransat@caleromarinas.com\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">race organisers<\/span><\/a><\/strong> for more information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The race is organised by the <strong><a title=\"Real Club N\u00e1utico de Arrecife\" href=\"http:\/\/rcna.info\/\" target=\"_blank\">Real Club N\u00e1utico de Arrecife (RCNA<\/a>)\u00a0<\/strong>and sponsored by Calero Marinas, the Canary Islands Tourism Authority and the Lanzarote Tourist Board with the assistance of Sail Newport and Newport Shipyard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The clock is ticking; the next <a title=\"Vend\u00e9e Globe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vendeeglobe.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong><\/a> will depart from Sables D&#8217;Olonne on the 6th November and registered skippers need to have completed their qualifying passages before the 1st October.\u00a0To put the Vend\u00e9e into context, this is a most extraordinary offshore challenge where the fleet will sail non-stop around the world without assistance; so no routing advice beyond avoiding dangerous situations, no medical intervention outside of emergencies and no stopping to go ashore!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Historically, a mere half of those who start the race end up making it to the finishing line&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">To win the race, these solo skippers need to sail flawlessly with a keen appreciation of velocity v. prudence, sustaining almost absurd levels of endurance during over two months at sea. It is an extreme sprint that\u00a0<\/span>rewards human endeavour, technical expertise and sometimes, quite simply, good fortune. Effecting their own repairs &#8211; often in particularly risky conditions, competitors need stay alert to survive, whilst also looking out to help any bestricken fellow participants. It is the stuff of legends and the birthplace of heroes and heroines.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5317\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caleromarinas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Team-SCA-sailing-outside-Puerto-Calero-training-base.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5317\" class=\" wp-image-5317 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.caleromarinas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Team-SCA-sailing-outside-Puerto-Calero-training-base.jpg\" alt=\"Calero Marinas Solo Transat\" width=\"368\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5317\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team SCA sailing outside their Puerto Calero training base<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Team \u201cNo Way Back\u201d, will be heading down next week to Puerto Calero, a well-known race destination and popular training ground for Volvo Ocean Race teams, for a preparation programme in the lead-up to the Calero Marinas Solo Transat. Owner Pieter Heerema described his decision to maximise qualification prospects by joining both this and the subsequent homeward <a title=\"NY-Vend\u00e9e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imoca.org\/en\/races\/24-transat-ny---vendee.htm\" target=\"_blank\">NY &#8211; Vend\u00e9e<\/a> race:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cWith the optimisation of quality training time a major priority for us, Lanzarote is an obvious choice based on having prime offshore conditions for boat testing within easy reach.\u00a0 The chance to assess my performance across two transat events, with the additional benefit of each offering the opportunity to qualify for the Vend\u00e9e Globe, seems too good an opportunity to miss. Another key advantage of the Calero Marinas Solo Transat is that the longer turnaround period in the USA allows us a more comfortable window to fine-tune the boat before the start of the return race to France.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That such a demanding test should require a solo qualifying passage comes as no surprise.
